Mattias Nordkvist grew up outside Nyköping with his family.
– I think it was a fantastic upbringing. Between forest and water. It suited me until I was about 15 years old. Because you weren’t allowed to stand out and be different. If you did something quiet, the whole village knew about it, he has said The evening paper.
– The father was a concrete worker on the construction sites and also a dance band musician. The mother was an administrator at Försäkringskassan. I have a brother three years older. Now my parents are retired and live in Nyköping, he continued.

– I was born in 1978, so I missed that wave with punk music, but those of us who were too young then rediscovered it in the 1990s. Ebba Grön, KSMB and such. The whole plan was to become a rock star, that was the goal. I fought quite hard for it. Got Ted Gardestad-scholarship 1998-1999. But between 20 and 25 it came to a standstill. Didn’t get any new songs out of me. Realized how hard it was to make a living at it, he said.
