“Everyone was tense and worried”

Edvin, 16, about the horror ride: “Thought the worst would happen” • Västtrafik’s answer

At three o’clock on Thursday afternoon, 16-year-old Edvin Mossdal took the bus home to Västra Frölunda from Järntorget in central Gothenburg.

In the middle of the journey, he suddenly noticed that the bus was driving in the opposite direction, somewhat GP was the first to tell about.

– It was scary, because you saw big trucks and cars coming towards us at high speed, says Edvin.

It was at the height of Jaegerdorffsplatsen that the bus driver drove off Oscarsleden on road E45. Then he drove up the road again – in the opposite direction.

“Everyone was tense and worried”

According to Edvin Mossdal, the bus driver tried to keep to the road, which was made difficult by oncoming traffic.

– He had to swing around a lot. You didn’t really know what was going to happen.

Edvin and the other passengers stayed at the back of the bus. Someone asked what was going on. Another called the police. Nobody managed to get in touch with the bus driver, says Edvin.

– Everyone was tense and worried.

They drove against oncoming traffic for between five and seven minutes. The bus then tried to drive off the road at the height of Orustgatan, but due to oncoming traffic the bus started reversing and then drove off the road through the terrain.

– The whole bus shook and you could hear things breaking. He saved the situation in a way, but it was very strange, says Edvin Mossdal.

Possible illness case

The bus then continued the regular route. At Frölunda Torg, the police were waiting.

– The driver felt a little dizzy, so it could possibly be a matter of illness, says police spokesperson Jens Andersson to GP.

It is not yet completely clear what happened, and the bus driver has been taken off duty pending an investigation.

Västtrafik has received several calls about the incident, but still does not fully know what happened. According to Anne Garcia Solving, business manager for bus operations at Västtrafik, it is the transport company that manages the operation and the police that are responsible for investigating what happened.

– You trust that the drivers know what they are doing. One wonders what standards they have when hiring drivers. I want them to improve so this doesn’t happen again, says Edvin Mossdal.
