Everyone was surprised by the events in Syria says Russias

“The events surprised everyone, including the members of the UN Security Council,” said Russian UN Ambassador Vassili Nebenzia.

The member countries of the UN Security Council have discussed the rapidly progressing events in Syria in their emergency meeting and are working on a statement on the situation in the coming days. The emergency meeting was called at Russia’s request.

– In my opinion, the Council was more or less unanimous on the need to preserve the territorial integrity and unity of Syria, to ensure the protection of civilians and humanitarian aid to the population, said Russia’s UN ambassador Vasili Nebenzia after the meeting.

Russia has been the ousted president of Syria Bashar al-Assad closest allies.

– The events surprised everyone, including the members of the Security Council. So we have to wait how the situation develops said Nebenzia.

Also US Deputy Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood said that practically all member states agreed that the most important thing now is to ensure Syria’s independence, territorial integrity and the safety of civilians.

– No one thought the Syrian forces would fall like a house of cards, Woods said.
