Everyone wants to see a quick ratification

Turkey’s president promised on Monday to propose to the country’s parliament to approve Sweden in NATO as quickly as possible. But neither Jens Stoltenberg nor Recep Tayyip Erdogan has given an exact time.

Nor does Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) want to speculate on how quickly Turkey can approve Sweden so that Sweden becomes NATO’s 32nd member state.

– We agree to do it as soon as possible, then Turkey itself must answer for what their parliamentary routines around this look like. So I dare not guess any specific day, but everyone expects a quick ratification, says Kristersson to P1 Morgon.

Hungary must also approve, ratify, Sweden’s NATO membership. However, Kristersson assumes what the Hungarian government has said – that Hungary will follow Turkey.

The Prime Minister emphasizes that Monday’s announcement was a big step towards the final ratification.

— It felt very good that we could agree on this and shake hands on this yesterday.

He is also asked if he celebrated last night.

— Well, it wasn’t the right time to celebrate too much. But we gathered the whole gang in a conference room and had a beer.
