Everyone says the same thing about the attention-grabbing pictures of Joel Lundqvist and the referee(!) – here’s the truth

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

These are the pictures that all of hockey Sweden is talking about.
Does Joel Lundqvist really get help from the referee here?
Now comes the explanation for the talked about pictures of the Frölunda icon.

Luleå defeated Frölunda after a dramatic penalty shootout on Tuesday evening and went to the coveted CHL final. But that is what happened between the Frölunda captain Joel Lundqvist and the assistant referee Gustav Jonsson that all of hockey Sweden is talking about after the match.

Joel & the judge

Lundqvist would play against Luleås Juhani Tyrvainen at 3-3 in the CHL semi-finals. As Jonsson wore a microphone, everyone could hear what he said to Lundqvist in connection with the drawing.
– Now wait Joel, and you can sit down. It is much easier. He will go towards the puck. He sits down and goes towards, he has done that all along, says the referee in Swedish in the attention-grabbing clip published on Twitter.

The video, which you can see below, has since been heavily debated in hockey Sweden, where most people say the same thing. Namely that “Joel Lundqvist decides in Swedish hockey” and that he gets help from the referee when drawing.
“Joel decides in the SHL. It is very old. So also in the CHL of course.. Here he is coached by the linesman (who must have forgotten that he is up-armed) in connection with drawing. Feeling bad,” writes the Luleå supporter who posted the clip on Twitter.

The explanation

Judge Gustav Jonsson himself gives his explanation of the whole situation with Joel Lundqvist and the drawing, see the video below. He admits that the words are a response to Lundqvist’s complaint and that he defends Tyrväinen’s drawing style.
– Just the words themselves, if you pick them out they sound strange. But I explain that Juhani has previously made correct tek (read. drawings). And I don’t think Joel needs any advice, says the assistant referee in a statement to Sportbladet.

The reason why he is currently speaking Swedish with Lundqvist and English with Tyrväinen, who understands Swedish, has also become a giant joke. And there is a simple explanation.
– In the CHL, everything must be in English, but I tried to explain a trickier thing in Swedish first because I’m not completely brilliant in English, says Jonsson in the interview.

Even Joel Lundqvist has spoken out about the whole thing, which was greatly magnified on social media after the match.
“I had a discussion before signing with the referee regarding locking the stick. He just explains that Tyrväinen is not doing anything wrong. It’s against the puck we’re going to go, just like the referee says. Other than that, this is how they communicate how we should stand and watch,” he writes in a text message to the evening newspaper.
