Everyone is at risk of becoming a carer due to a staff shortage in elderly care: ‘Something really needs to change’

Compensation for informal carers has fallen in many municipalities in
Government agency CIZ determines who can rely on the Long-term Care Act. This law is intended for people who need daily care. For example, if you have dementia, you will usually receive care profile Nursing and Care 5, VV5. If you only have somatic (physical) complaints, you will often receive care profile VV6. The higher the care profile, the more care you need. For example, you are no longer able to wash yourself or go to the toilet independently.

The care profiles determine how much money is available for your care and what you can buy for it. This is possible with a personal budget, the so-called PGB, or you can call in the care office that will arrange the care for you.

People with a care profile from the CIZ can be admitted to a nursing home if the care cannot be fully arranged at home, but the waiting lists are long. Sometimes it can take up to a year before a place is available. During this waiting period, the care is arranged at home by the Care Office. If that care is still insufficient and there are no informal carers who can assist, you are eligible for an urgent placement. That is often not where you prefer.
