We all have chargers all over the house, but everyone makes the same mistake…
Phone, computer, tablet, baby monitor, electric toothbrush… Most people have at least one device of this type and, more often than not, they have several. In order to make them work, it is essential to have a charger to fill the battery with energy. So we all have at least one charger for each device, or even several. Although these objects are used on a daily basis, we are often poorly informed about best practices, so everyone tends to make the same mistake with their chargers.
When picking up our device because it is charged or because we are leaving the room, we unplug it from the charger. But what we almost never do, out of laziness or forgetfulness, is remove the charger from the mains socket. However, this is not without consequences. One of them is that as long as it’s plugged in, even if it’s not connected to any device, it uses electricity. The amount of energy it uses is very low, but it does exist, especially since we often have several chargers plugged into different places in the house… So, we think about the planet and its bill, and unplug it when not using it!
The other problem is that a charger plugged in when empty can overheat, particularly if it is damaged or of poor quality. And there is a risk that this overheating will cause a fire. Although fortunately this remains rare, it is better not to tempt the devil. You should also know that a charger that is left plugged in permanently will wear out more quickly and therefore become less efficient.
Worried you’ll forget where you put your charger if you unplug it? There is a simple solution: plug it into a power strip with an off button. All you have to do is turn it off when you pick up your device. Furthermore, to preserve the life of the battery, remember that you should not leave it charging overnight. It is better to plug it in at a time when you can monitor the charging status, in order to disconnect it from the charger as soon as the battery is full.
