Every third German man is okay with violence against women

A third of German men consider it acceptable to use violence against women. This is according to a survey by the children’s rights organization Plan International Germany.

The survey was answered by 1,000 men and an equal number of women between the ages of 18 and 35. The result shows that 33 percent of men believe that it is okay to resort to violence against their female partner. Just as many answered that they had done just this at some point.

Karsten Kassner, representative of the umbrella organization Bondesforum Männer which advocates gender equality, describes the results as “shocking”.

Over 115,000 women were subjected to violence in 2022

Just over half (52 percent) answered that they see it as their task to be the main breadwinner in the household, while the women’s primary responsibility is to take care of the home. Almost as many (48 percent) stated that they disapproved of expressions of homosexuality in public.

– Traditional gender roles are still deeply rooted in people’s heads, says Alexandra Tschacher, spokesperson for Plan International Germany, to Funke.

According to the German police, over 115,000 German women were victims of domestic violence last year. The year before that, 301 women were killed by a partner.

A third of the men between the ages of 18 and 35 in the survey considered it acceptable to use violence against their female partner.
