A 13-year-old girl living in India was hospitalized after not being able to eat or drink for days. After the tests at the hospital, it was stated that the girl had hair on her stomach. The operation on Tuesday removed a 32-inch-long, rugby ball-shaped hairball weighing 1.2 kg from the girl’s stomach. Doctors said that the girl had Rapunzel Syndrome, in which she swallowed her own hair.
He vomited MINUTES AFTER EATING SOMETHING
The girl had recently complained of severe abdominal pain, vomiting and bouts of indigestion. His family took him to a private clinic and he followed the prescription, but his condition did not improve. She also vomited for minutes after she ate something. When the girl’s complaints increased, she was taken to another hospital. At the hospital where he was taken, the doctors recommended sonography. The report revealed an accumulation of human hair in the gastrointestinal tract.

Dr Joseph D’souza, who performed the surgery, said: “After examining her stomach and reviewing the sonography report, I spoke to the girl’s family and learned that she has a history of seven years of swallowing her own hair and chewing her nails. This condition is known as Rapunzel Syndrome.”

“After an hour and a half of surgery, we were able to successfully remove a giant hairball that was 32 inches long, 13 inches in circumference, and weighed 1.2 kg. The hairball was mixed with food particles and gastric juice inside the stomach. D’souza said in the middle of the day that the girl is currently under observation at the hospital.

“He would often complain of stomachaches as the buildup of human hair tightens the muscle causing loss of appetite. He lost weight and became very thin because he could not consume food and drink.” “Because human hair cannot be digested, it builds up in the stomach, causing intestinal pain,” he added.
WHAT IS RAPUNZEL SYNDROME?
Talking about Rapunzel’s Syndrome, which causes hairballs, Dr D’souza said: “Eating of hair, known as trichophagia, is more common in young girls than boys. These children chew the hair before unconsciously swallowing it.” He added that this is a psychiatric disorder.

Dr D’souza said: “Children with these types of psychiatric disorders often crave these non-food items. These children need psychological counseling and good care. I recommend that parents be more careful with their children when they encounter discomfort such as swallowing their own hair.
