Ankara University Faculty of Medicine Department of Dermatology Lecturer Prof. Dr. Bengü Nisa Akay shared information about this type of cancer and the free screening applications that will be launched across Turkey with the Turkish Dermatology Association.
“INCREASED VIEW”
Explaining that “melanoma”, which is the most dangerous type of skin cancer, can spread rapidly and cause death if it is not detected early, Akay said, “When melanoma is caught early, it poses no risk. Here, the only treatment method is to enlarge the lesion, and then we monitor our patients with some preventive measures and control examinations. ” said.
Stating that melanoma is especially common in Australia, the USA and some European countries where sun exposure is high and light-skinned people live intensely, Akay said, “Skin cancer was not seen this often in our country in the past. However, the incidence of skin cancer has increased in our country in recent years with the increase in sun exposure.” he said.
AT RISK FOR SERIOUS SUNBURN BEFORE 18 YEARS OLD
prof. Dr. Pointing out that skin cancer is now seen in younger age groups, Akay continued his words as follows:
“The most important issue in skin cancer is early diagnosis and prevention to prevent the stage of spreading to the body. Those with fair skin, blond hair, green or blue eyes, skin type prone to freckles, freckles on their shoulders and face, especially those with blisters at least once until the age of 18. Those with sunburn are in the risk group. In addition, family history, some genetic diseases are also factors that increase the risk.”
AN ANNUAL CHECK ALERTS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE MORE THAN 20 ‘ME’ ON THEIR ARRANGEMENT
Emphasizing that it is absolutely necessary to monitor whether moles on the body also grow, Akay said, “Especially if you have more than 50 ‘moles’ on your body and more than 20 on your arms, these are risk factors for the development of melanoma cancer. They need to be scanned with a computerized dermatoscopy device.” said.
prof. Dr. Akay said that in dermatoscopy scans, moles of people are recorded and even the smallest change in me can be detected in this way, so that cancer can be caught at a very early stage.
“SOLARUM CAUSES SERIOUS RISKS”
Emphasizing that the solarium is a serious risk factor for skin cancer, Akay said, “The solarium causes serious risks in terms of skin cancer. Our recommendation is not to enter the solarium at all. Even going to the solarium once increases the risk of melanoma exponentially.” made the warning.
Akay pointed out that the entrance to the solarium is prohibited for those under the age of 18 in the USA and Europe, and underlined that they do not recommend a solarium for all age groups.
“SUN PROTECTION SHOULD BE USED, DARK COLOR CLOTHING SHOULD BE PREFERRED”
Stating that people working in the field are also at risk due to constant sun exposure, Akay warned:
“We should avoid exposure to the sun as much as possible between the hours of 10.00-16.00 when the sun is very intense. If you are going to enter the sea or the pool during these hours, very strict protection methods should be taken. The use of sunscreen is very important, the sunscreens we use should contain both UVA and UVB, 20-25 minutes before going out. First, it should be applied as a thick layer and thoroughly fed into the skin.Even the best sunscreen’s effectiveness lasts for 3.5-4 hours, so it should be repeated.
The use of a hat is very important. In terms of clothing, white, light-colored clothing causes the reflection of the sun’s rays and increases the sun exposure. Dark colored clothes absorb the light. For this reason, we recommend choosing dark clothes when walking outside under the sun.
“IT IS ENOUGH TO KEEP THE INNER SIDE OF THE ARM IN THE SUN FOR 10 MINUTES FOR VITAMIN D”
prof. Dr. Akay also shared the following information on how the body’s need for vitamin D can be obtained from the sun:
“Vitamin D is synthesized more in the body at certain hours. This is the 10.00-10.30, 14.00-14.30 hour intervals that we warn you not to go out in the sun. You can synthesize it very well.”
“FREE ‘ME’ SCANS WILL BE DONE IN 41 CENTERS”
prof. Dr. Bengü Nisa Akay, emphasizing that skin cancer screenings will be started across the country with the Turkish Dermatology Association, said: “Free ‘me’ screenings will be carried out in 41 centers in 17 provinces covering all regions between May 22 and 30. During the scans, people will be examined for whole body, whether there is any risk or not. In these screenings, we will also inform people about the ways to protect themselves from skin cancer and the importance of using sunscreen.” said.
“EVEN ONCE IN THEIR LIVES, WE INVITE ALL CITIZENS TO PARTICIPATE IN THESE FREE SCANNINGS”
Noting that the screening dates in the centers will be announced on the association’s website, Akay said, “The incidence of skin cancers has also increased in our country. It is very important to be able to detect them early. We carry out the screenings for this purpose. We invite all citizens to participate in these free screenings, even once in their lives.” he called. (AA)
