The initially six-part Amazon series is based on the Japanese video game series Yakuza by Sega Since 2005, it has produced nine main parts and numerous remakes and spin-offs, which have sold over 21 million copies in total (via Sega). By comparison: the Fallout series, in addition to various spin-offs, has only just released its fifth numbered part.
As in the template, it will be about the Yakuza gangster Kazuma Kiryu who has a great sense of justice and causes mischief in the Kamurocho entertainment district of Tokyo. The story is based on the first game and takes place on two time levels in 1995 and 2005.

Ryoma Takeuchi, who is known in Japan for Tokusatsu superhero series such as Kamen Rider Drive and who also appeared in Pokémon Detective Pikachu, took on the role of Kiryu. He got himself in shape especially for the tough role, as he revealed at the press conference for the series (via IGN ):
You can’t play Kazuma Kiryu without getting in shape, so I had to put my mind to it. […] I immersed myself in the role so much that it became hard to know where he ended and I began. This includes training for the part, the costume and so on. I feel less like I’m playing Kiryu and more like he’s become part of my family.When is the Yakuza series coming to Amazon?
Internationally, it starts on October 24, 2024when the first half of the first season goes online simultaneously in over 240 countries, including Germany. The second half will follow a few days later, on November 1, 2024.

The film was directed by Masaharu Take, who worked on the series The Naked Director for Netflix. He said of his series hero:
In 1995, the protagonist is still very young and makes a lot of mistakes that lead to him spending a decade in prison and having to deal with the consequences after his release. I tried to show the differences between the two time periods and the cast helped me to realize that.
