The gold fight is shaping up to be a duel between Salonen and the American Holyn Handley.
Dazzling drives raised Eveliina Salonen to share the lead at the World Frisbee Golf Championships in Lynchburg, Virginia on Friday.
Salonen’s round of 61 shots (8 under par) was the best of the day. There was even more on offer, as he was able to attempt birdies from less than 20 meters on all 18 fairways, and as many as 14 times from less than ten. Strong winds sometimes hinder putting, but on the third day of the competition, we played on a sheltered forest course.
The gold fight is becoming a duel between Salonen and the United States to Holyn Handley (-17) in between, because instead of the third, seven throws have accumulated.
When a Finn has struggled to win a Frisbee golf tournament, his rival has practically always been more meritorious. Now the experience advantage points in Salonen’s direction for two Majors, because the American opponent does not have the highest level title.
Saturday and Sunday will be played on an open golf course, which should be more suitable for the 24-year-old Finn. Salonen beat Handley by three throws there on Thursday.
Henna Blomroos (-4) and Heidi Laine (-2) are already in the top ten, but they can be expected to rise as they benefit from their long throws on the golf course.
