EU’s Borrell proposes two billion additional support for Ukraine – emphasizes the need to deliver more ammunition to the country as quickly as possible

EUs Borrell proposes two billion additional support for Ukraine

According to the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs, the member states are quite unanimous about additional deliveries of ammunition to Ukraine, but several questions still need to be answered.

The EU should supply Ukraine with more artillery ammunition, and it should supply it as quickly as possible. This is the opinion of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrellwho attended an informal meeting of EU defense ministers in Stockholm today.

– In order for Ukraine to win peace, it must win war, Borrell said at a press conference in Stockholm.

He outlined three parallel steps by which the EU could guarantee ammunition supplies to Ukraine. They include a total of two billion euro support packages for Ukraine from the European Peace Fund and the European Defense Agency.

Borrell suggests that the member states supply Ukraine with artillery ammunition from their own national stockpiles.

In addition, he proposes joint orders of the member countries for the ammunition industry, so that they can partly fill their own stocks and partly secure deliveries to Ukraine in the future.

Thirdly, Borrell emphasizes that the European defense industry needs to increase its capacity in order to be able to meet the needs of the EU’s national armies and Ukraine.

According to Borrell, the member countries are quite unanimous about additional supplies of ammunition to Ukraine. He hopes that the matter will be decided at the meeting of EU foreign and defense ministers on March 20.
