The 28 -year -old singer unveiled “Maman”, the song that will represent France at Eurovision. A song that has already seen.
At the halftime of the France-Scotland rugby match in what was a final for a final in the VI Nations tournament, Saturday March 15, Louane Assured the show by singing his new song “Maman”. It was this song that was chosen to represent France at Eurovision, next May. A walk that is addressed to her daughter, Esmée, born in 2020. But especially to her mother, who died in 2014 when she was a teenager. Because she had already announced it during the formalization of her candidacy for the television competition: the singer participates in tribute to her mother.
The song was not initially written for Eurovision. She was to appear in her latest album, solo, released in October 2024. But the song had arrived “like a hair on the soup when I had almost finished writing the album,” said Louane at a press conference a few minutes after her performance at the Stade de France. When she was asked by the French Televisions teams to participate in Eurovision, she finally offered them this ballad. “I never thought it was a song intended for Eurovision,” said the 28 -year -old artist. “On the other hand, compared to my story, what I lived and my dreams and to those of my mom, I couldn’t see another one.”
“This is the only message I want to leave to my mother”
Is this the best choice to try to win the competition? Louane assumes. “I know that going to Eurovision with a song like this is a opposite view, because we rather think of the party. […] ‘Maman’ is not a hyperpop tempo up that I could have offered as I also do on stage. But in the end, if I am 100 %honest, the ballads, that’s what I prefer. […] Is it the right one? Only time will tell us. But for my story, for my mom, it’s obviously the right one. “
Jean-Pierre Pasqualini, Melody TV program director, defends this choice at the microphone of BFMTV. “She had a lot of ingredients: who did not have a mother in her life? It is a theme that could not be more universal. In addition she has just taken a word, which is very easy to remember for all the peoples who do not speak French.” A method already used in the past, after “here” by Barbara Pravi and “Mercy” by Madame Monsieur.
We can still only compare this title “Maman” to a previous one, released in 2015 on her first album Chambre 12 … and also entitled “Maman”. “These are two completely different songs,” says Louane. “‘Mom’, which I have just interpreted, is a series of the first but above all, and that is what is most important to me, it represents who I am really today. And it is the only message I want to leave to my mother.”
The 2015 song has disappeared from streaming platforms, on Wednesday. “It means that today, I have advanced and that I am well, that’s the thing I want us to remember.”
