Europe’s glaciers are melting at record speed this hot summer. Measurements on the Morteratsch Glacier in the Swiss Alps usually take place at the end of September, but already in July the measuring rods risk melting away and the researchers have to drill holes for new rods.
This year, it has thus already melted twice as much as a normal summer. By the year 2099, the glaciers in the Alps are estimated to have shrunk by over 80 percent.
Belgian tourist Lisa Neyt is shocked by the change:
– Now it really shows. My God, I was here 15 years ago and now the snow is gone and the mountain streams are gone.
