The message that Europe is excluded from the American-Russian talks about peace in Ukraine caused the president of France, Emmanuel Macron, to call an urgent meeting in Paris on Monday.
Leaders from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands and Denmark, which represented the Nordic countries and the Baltic countries, as well as NATO and NATO participated in the meeting.
After the end of the meeting, Denmark’s prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, said that the renovation of Europe was the “most important message” from the meeting, reports Danish TV2.
– We have to equip Denmark and we have to equip Europe. And we have to do that to avoid more war.
Frederiksen also believes that a ceasefire in Ukraine can sound better than it really is.
– We risk that a ceasefire does not lead to peace and actually put other European countries and Ukraine in an even more dangerous situation, since Russia can use a ceasefire – if it is on the wrong terms – to mobilize, start over and attack a new country, she said according to TV2.
Prompts to unity
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for a consensus between Europe and the United States regarding responsibility for Ukraine’s security after the crisis meeting, reports Reuters news agency.
“There must be no division of security and responsibility between Europe and the United States,” Scholz said.
The German Chancellor also said that the debate about sending peacekeeping forces to Ukraine at the same time as the war is ongoing is “hasty” and “highly inappropriate”, writes AFP.
Responsibility will be on Europe
The European countries will not participate in peace negotiations between the United States, Russia and Ukraine. At the same time, the United States wants to know which European countries are willing to station troops in Ukraine to maintain a possible peace. Responsibility for this will be European, according to the United States.
– Europe must stand for the security forces to Ukraine, which will guarantee a possible ceasefire. Because the United States does not intend to do that, said SVT’s foreign reporter Ida Linde, on site in Paris.
Britain’s prime minister has said that the country is ready to send troops and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) has said that it is an opportunity for Sweden as well.
