Europa League 2024-2025: Lyon in danger in Türkiye, Nice believes in a miracle, ranking and results

Europa League 2024 2025 Lyon in danger in Turkiye Nice believes

In a good position, Olympique Lyonnais must finish the job in Türkiye this Thursday, January 23 while Nice dreams of an exploit.

Olympique Lyonnais, already assured of its place in the Europa League play-offs, is now aiming for the top 8 in the event of a good result on the Fenerbahçe pitch. With 13 points, OL can no longer escape the top 24 but still feel in danger. For several weeks, the results have been bad and Pierre Sage has been in the hot seat. In the event of defeat, the latter could be sacked, Joao Fonseca, former coach of AC Milanbeing already anticipated.

For Nice, we must now save honor. Without any victory since the start of the European campaign and with only two draws, Nice, 35th out of 36 teams in the ranking before this 7th and penultimate day of the league phase, is not yet completely eliminated. To qualify for the play-offs, you must already win the next two matches against the Swedes of Elfsborg then the Norwegians of Bodo/Glimt on Thursday January 30 and hope for missteps from your opponents who are ahead in the standings.

New rules

The 2024-2025 Europa League, which has been scheduled from Wednesday September 25, is a completely revamped edition of the competition, with UEFA having decided to increase the number of teams from 32 to 36. Gone is the traditional phase of groups, place in a single league where each team will face 8 different opponents (4 at home, 4 away), according to a draw, like the changes made in the Champions League. At the end of this first phase, until January 30, 2025, the first eight in this unique league will be directly qualified for the round of 16 of the Europa League. The teams ranked from 9th to 24th place will compete in play-offs to reach the eighth place. Beyond this 24th place, pure and simple elimination awaits the lowest placed teams.

The play-offs for the final phase of the Europa League have been scheduled for January 31, February 16 and 20, 2025. The round of 16 on March 6 and 13, then the quarter-finals on April 10 and 17, the semi-finals on May 1 and 8 and the final on May 21, 2025, in Bilbao. Another notable difference with previous editions: no team from the Champions League will enter this Europa League. Good news for the participating clubs who have had the trophy stolen five times by clubs from the C1 in recent years.

With 36 teams and 144 matches to play, this new format aims to offer a longer and more intense “league phase”. The French teams will have a lot to do in this major tough championship, but can have great ambitions.
