Euro 2024 qualifiers: France offers Greece before going on vacation

Euro 2024 qualifiers France offers Greece before going on vacation

France won this Monday, June 19 against Greece at the Stade de France (1-0). Kylian Mbappé is the sole scorer of the evening.

With a 54th goal this season in the 55th minute from the penalty spot, Kylian Mbappé allowed France to win at the Stade de France in the last outing of the Blues before a well-deserved vacation. Mbappé became at 24 and a half the youngest player to reach 70 caps for the France team.

And now the holidays

Inside Saint-Denis, Didier Deschamps’ men were 90 minutes away from closing their rich 2022-23 season, marked by a world final in Qatar last December and a flawless start to 2023, with three wins and no goals conceded. The sluggish success against Gibraltar last Friday in Faro (3-0) however revealed a certain weariness among the Blues, after a month of June that is rarely quiet in odd-numbered years, without much competition.

After two victories in two matches (against Gibraltar and Ireland), Greece, which made a convincing start to qualifying for Euro 2024, therefore lost in the Paris suburbs. The Blues, who played three games (4-0 against the Netherlands, 1-0 in Ireland and 3-0 against Gibraltar), knew they could take off with another victory at home, in a group B where the first two will win their ticket for the Euro in Germany in the summer of 2024.

In the second half, Antoine Griezmann had the opportunity to double the free kick, but the ball went just above the crossbar (73rd). Greece, reduced to 10 in the 69th minute after the expulsion of Konstantinos Mavropanos for a charge on Randal Kolo Muani, did not bend despite the assaults of the Blues, like this strike from Mbappé after a good heel from Griezmann (81st) .

In Group B, the Blues have 12 points in four games, far ahead of Greece, which remains at 6 points, but with one game less. The Blues can go on vacation duty accomplished. Next meeting: September 7 against Ireland, still at the Stade de France.
