EU urges Tiktok to limit misinformation

— Now, more than ever, we must do everything we can to protect our citizens, especially children and teenagers, against illegal content and misinformation, says EU Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton.

Breton, who during the day sat in a video meeting with Tiktok’s CEO Shou Zi Chew, highlights that Tiktok has implemented several improvements in recent months, and mentions in particular new features to protect users and investments in content moderation.

Tiktok states in a report that the company has stopped four million offensive videos in the EU in September.

The EU launched a review of Tiktok in October to find out if the company is doing enough to live up to the new EU regulation DSA, which forces the major platforms to, among other things, restrict illegal content.

The EU Commission is also examining false and misleading information on the X platform about the battles between Israel and terrorist-labeled Hamas, and has demanded information from Meta about what measures the company has taken to limit problematic content spread about Hamas attacks in Israel.
