Can the regime’s fall in Syria get more refugees to return home? Now, several EU countries are hoping at least temporary home travel to investigate the situation.
Migration Minister Johan Forssell (M) notes that Sweden still has a travel discharge for Syria. At the same time, he would like to see a concrete proposal from the European Commission on rules for how Syrians should be able to go home and investigate the situation, without risking their refugee status in the meantime.
– It is still very uncertain how it will be in Syria, but this would be a way for many to be able to travel back home. Maybe you also choose to return permanently, says Forssell on the way to a ministerial meeting with other EU colleagues in Brussels on Wednesday.
At the same time, the migration ministers are uploading for the proposals that domestic commissioner Magnus Brunner will present on Tuesday next week on updated rules to get more expelled to really leave the EU. Here Forssell also wants to see proposals to try so -called “return hubs”, where expelled can be collected in countries outside the EU waiting to be taken to their home countries.
