(Finance) – “I am happy with the conclusions of the EU Council in which there is a strong presence of Italian interests”Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said this in the press point at the end of the EU Council in Brussels, underlining that “all EU countries agree on the fact that new funds must be issued on the migration dossier”.

“The letter sent by President von der Leyen is included in the Council’s conclusions which is the result of a strategy promoted by Italy”, added the Premier.

A passage also on the ratification of the ESM, in the wake of the pressure from Brussels. “I believe that the ESM is secondary to the first negotiation, which is the one on the Stability Pact”, Meloni reiterated, explaining that at the European Council “there was no discussion about the ESM, it was not the subject of this debate”.

On a possible new postponement of the debate in the Chamber, the Prime Minister underlined: “Parliament will say it, it is not up to me to decide”. However, he “continues to believe that, regardless of what one thinks about the instrument itself, it is not helpful for anyone to ask the question now.” For the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Instead, “that of the ESM is a good reform, I suggest everyone to approve it”.

“We should not lose sight of the importance of finalizing the ESM reform and the benefits this would bring to our institutional architecture. In recent months we have received regular updates on the ongoing parliamentary process for the ratification of the ESM Treaty in Italy, and we await looking forward to its conclusion as soon as possible”, the President of the Eurogroup had warned, Paschal Donohoe, in the letter sent to the President of the European Council, Charles Michael.
