Today, China begins its largest ever military exercises near Taiwan after the island nation was visited earlier this week by US top politician Nancy Pelosi.

The regime’s decision to carry out the exercises is condemned by EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell.

“There is no justification for using a visit as a pretext for aggressive military activity in the Taiwan Strait. It is normal and routine for legislators from our countries to travel internationally,” writes Borrell on Twitter.

The exercises continue until Sunday and, according to state-controlled media, will include “live ammunition”. Some of the activities will take place on international waterways used for trade, writes The Wall Street Journal.
