EU Commission reassesses Lufthansas E6bn recapitalisation in 2020

(Telestock) – The 6 billion euro recapitalization for the benefit ofthe Lufthansas, approved by the European Commission on 25 June 2020, it came back under scrutiny after being annulled by the Court of Justice on 10 May 2023 and subsequently appealed by the airline itself. In the first assessment, the support operation for the economic problems caused by the pandemic was deemed compliant with EU rules on State aid.

To take advantage of this, Lufthansa had given up to 24 daily slots at Frankfurt and Munich airports to competing airlines, as well as producing dividends and granting bonuses to the airline’s executives. The European Commission has now reserved the right to conduct a more in-depth investigation.
