EU climate target, WWF: more can be done

EU climate target WWF more can be done

(Finance) – The EU Commission indicates the emissions reduction target of 90% in 2040 and for the WWF “this is an important step” but “it is in everyone’s interest to achieve climate neutrality first”. “To limit global warming to 1.5 degrees we must achieve climate neutrality by 2050 on a global scale – observes the NGO – Considering the responsibility of the EU for historical emissions, it would be fairer not to stop at 90%, but to aim for zero net emissions by 2040″.

As part of the 90% target, The Commission has also indicated how sectors should contribute to efforts to reduce emissions, explains the WWF according to which “It is clear that sufficient action is not planned on the land use frontland use change and forestry, especially through the restoration and protection of natural ecosystems”.

All sectors, including agriculture, explains the environmental association, “they will need to reduce emissions significantly and we need to move towards healthier diets with lower levels of meat and dairy consumption.

For agriculture, the paradox is even more evident: the more decarbonisation accelerates, the greater possibility there is of limiting the extreme phenomena that have already brought agricultural activities to their knees in many areas and even in some regions, such as Romagna in Italy and Thessaly in Greece.

In particular, the possibilities of preventing the climate from destabilizing and agriculture from becoming very, very difficult are greater.” According to the WWF, “all fossil fuel subsidies should be eliminated immediately and the freed up resources directed to support the ecological transition by helping families and businesses. The political framework must be strengthened, i.e. combined with appropriate social policy measures“.
