(Finance) – Continued negotiations between the EU and China, supported by technical negotiations with individual Chinese manufacturers, to avoid the imposition of definitive tariffs onimport of Chinese battery electric vehiclescurrently scheduled for October 30th. This morning the Vice President of the European Commission for Trade, Valdis Dombrovskis, and the Chinese Minister of Commerce, Wang Wentaothey discussed via video conference.
Olof Gillthe Commission’s Trade spokesperson, confirmed the willingness to continue technical discussions, without providing specific timing details. He stated that any solution will have to be compatible with WTO rulesensure a level playing field in the European market and mitigate the risk of damage to EU industry.
When asked about a possible visit by Dombrovskis to China, Gill avoided speculation, confirming only that the EU remains open to negotiated solutions, including negotiations with specific car manufacturers and under the EU-China Customs Cooperation Agreement (CCMAA).
