EU chief sees evacuation plan for Gaza

— To think that you can move a million people in 24 hours in a situation like the one in Gaza can only mean a humanitarian disaster, Borrell said at a press conference in connection with a visit to China.

He added that the evacuation plan is “completely, completely impossible to implement”.

Borrell’s statement came before Saturday’s announcement that the deadline for civilians to leave northern Gaza would be extended to 4pm this afternoon local time.

Borrell also repeated previous statements that the EU supports Israel’s right to self-defense, but underlined that there are reservations:

— As with all rights, there are limits. That limit is called international law.

Earlier this week, Borrell also said that the EU does not support a total siege of Gaza. Even UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said that he is “deeply saddened” by Israel’s announcement of imposing a total siege on the Gaza Strip.
