Especially Turks will benefit The duration has been reduced The

The citizenship law has changed, and many regulations have been made, from legal residence period to parental residence or working time. It will now be easier to gain dual citizenship in Germany, where most people in Turkey have relatives.

DUAL CITIZENSHIP IS ON THE TABLE IN THE EARLY DAYS OF 2024

Government members consisting of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Greens reached an agreement on the new citizenship law.

The law is expected to be discussed in the Federal Parliament in January.

If the bill, whose first discussion was held in the parliament on November 30, becomes law, it will pave the way for dual citizenship for Turks living in the country.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE DRAFT?

If the bill becomes law, the right to dual citizenship, which was previously applied to citizens of a limited number of countries, will be expanded to everyone. In addition, the requirements for foreigners to become German citizens will also be eased.

Accordingly, the “legal residence period” required for citizenship will be reduced from 8 years to 5 years.

This period may be reduced to 3 years for those who make special efforts to adapt to the living conditions in Germany, such as being successful in their field of work or education, or doing volunteer work.

The bill, which allows dual citizenship, will also allow multiple citizenships.

CHILDREN CAN BE DUAL CITIZENSHIP

At the same time, the regulation stating that those who become citizens of a foreign country will lose their German citizenship will also be eliminated.

Foreign children born in the country will be able to obtain a German passport if one of the parents has legally resided in Germany for 5 years.

In addition, children will be able to become dual citizens by preserving their parents’ citizenship.

The bill also includes regulation for “guest workers” who came to the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) until 30 June 1974 within the scope of the Labor Agreement and to the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany) as contract workers until 13 June 1990. .
