ESO changes its battle system 4 times in 1 year but doesn’t find the right way

The MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online gets update 35 in August, which brings changes to the combat system. The community reacts to this with mixed feelings. On MeinMMO you can find out which points of view are represented and how they are distributed.

Changes to the combat system have always generated a lot of discussion in the community. Because opinions are extremely divided. Since Update 32 Deadlands, there have been heated discussions with each subsequent update of the base game.

The opinions of the players differ widely. Some support the changes to the combat system, while others are strictly against it. Of course, there are also moderate voices among the players. But they are rather manageable.

What are the changes to the combat system? Two things are adjusted:

  • Light and Heavy Attack damage no longer scales with attributes. This reduces damage by 6-11%.
  • Combat effects that give you buffs and increase your damage last longer.
  • The developers justify the changes with the fact that they want to reduce the strong difference in outgoing damage, which is significantly influenced by light attacks. By increasing global cooldowns and increasing the duration of damage over time abilities, the developers are looking to take some of the stress out of combat rotations. But does that work or do they miss the mark?

By the way, since July 11th you can try out the planned changes yourself on the public test server (PTS). You can download it via your client. But you need as much storage space as the game itself needs.

Long-time players are annoyed by the frequent changes

There are critical voices in the community. Some of them even feel displeasure:

  • “I’m honestly skeptical that the changes will bring the effects that will benefit the game (in my ESO environment),” The_Saint wrote in the July 6 forum thread.
  • “I just realized I can’t enjoy this game anymore. Whatever makes you happy about it, IT WILL be trashed in a few weeks. I no longer feel motivated. There’s no progress, it’s just tiring,” Avishag wrote in the official July 11 discussion thread
  • “I don’t know if accurate feedback on damage between Live/PTS will be possible now since trial dummy buffs don’t match Live, but I lost at least 20,000 DPS over eight parses. This effectively ends my ‘Rockgrove Hard Mode’ dreams and could result in a prog group being disbanded for it,” QueuesAsTanks also wrote in the official July 11 discussion thread
  • “The problem is that the overall damage of everyone has been nerfed. Why is that bad? Because ZOS will not adjust the content,” warns Grabmoore in a comment on MeinMMO.
  • Our expert assessment also coincides with the opinions of the players. MeinMMO author MiezeMelli is critical of the changes:

ESO is turning the combat system upside down with the new patch – but that worries me

Increased effect duration accommodates weaker players

There are players in the discourse who are relatively neutral about the changes. But that is rather the exceptional case. Most comments are pro or con.

  • “I see the weakening of the LightAttacks uncritically, but also ineffective in connection with the lengthening of the dots,” writes Rollio in the forum thread of July 6th
  • But there are players who are looking forward to the changes despite the heated discussion:

  • “Thank you to ZOS for these changes. I love ESO, but I’m bad at fighting – I just don’t have the dexterity to switch bars and perform two to three actions per second,” wrote mashugana in the official discussion thread on July 11th
  • However, it remains unclear whether the implementation will also take place as the developers intended.

ESO misses the target with the changes

What’s very noticeable when you keep an eye on the ESO Forums are critical voices from a wide variety of players. There is often controversy between casual and core players, but this time you can find dissenting voices from many parts of the community.

There are also players who are just fed up with the changes being made to the combat system with each update. It is also often criticized that the purpose has been missed and that the implementation of planned changes has not led to the hoped-for results.

  • This is what the user Jaava says in a forum post: “Apart from the fact that many of these things catapult us back years. Why do you have to tweak the balance so hard every 3 months?”
  • “I can’t remember any other game I’ve played that comes up with ‘bad’ news about changes as often as ESO. At least related to the changes to the combat system. So far I’ve always been able to somehow come to terms with the changes. But the changes have always missed ZOS’ goal of capping the immense damage that top players can get out of the game. Seen so subjectively, they have always made life more difficult for me as a middle-class DD than for the top players.”, writes ASSOLoki in the forum thread of July 6th.
  • The reasons for pros and cons are varied, since each player naturally sets different priorities. In an MMORPG in particular, you often have to decide on one aspect of the game because the scope of the game in all its facets takes up a lot of time.
