Escape from forensic Helix in Huddinge not yet found

The man is convicted of, among other things, attempted murder after completely unprovoked throwing a person onto the subway track in central Stockholm in 2018.

The violent criminal suffers from a serious mental disorder and was sentenced to psychiatric care for the act of insanity. He has since been in the Helix unit at Huddinge Hospital, south of Stockholm.

“Sometimes they manage to be fast”

In connection with a supervised outing on Tuesday, near the forensic psychiatric clinic, the man managed to escape.

– The patient changed his mind from what was agreed and ran away from the staff. He picked up speed and they couldn’t catch up to him. Sometimes they manage to be fast, says Ola Broström, director of operations for Forensic Psychiatry Vård Stockholm.

– They called the police and raised the alarm at once, completely according to our routines.

The man is wanted by the police. As of Thursday afternoon, he was still at large.

– He has not returned. The police are fully responsible for the search. The police have received the information they need from us and then they draw their conclusions and look for him based on where they judge to be relevant, says Ola Broström.

“Turns over all stones – takes it very seriously”

Helix has launched an internal investigation to review themselves.

– We go through the incident in detail, very carefully. You turn over all the stones and try to analyze if it is something we should have understood before it happened, if there were signals or signs that this was going on.

– In the emergency review so far, we have not seen anything obvious that we broke down in our routines. But it’s always serious when something like this happens, we take it very seriously.

The chief medical officers have for several years assessed that the man has a high risk of recidivism to commit serious crimes. But he was now in the “weeding out” phase and was no longer considered dangerous.

– We can comment on the danger and the condition when he left the healthcare facility, when we last saw him. He was in stable condition and has been cared for for many years and is well medicated. But it is like in all people in society. One can suddenly become dangerous for various reasons, but we have no direct suspicion that he will become dangerous. At the same time, I can’t promise that about any person in society.
