Ottawa’s Swedish defender Erik Brännström left the ice on a stretcher after an unfortunate fall in the NHL game against the New York Islanders on Friday night.

The 24-year-old from Eksjöbördige was tackled in the ninth minute of the second period by the Islanders’ Cal Clutterbuck and landed head first on the ice.

After the second period, Ottawa wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that Brännström is awake, can move his arms and legs and has been taken to hospital for further examination.

Coach DJ Smith spoke after the game.

– We are waiting for information. It looks like he’s fine right now. That’s positive, but we await more updates.

It was Brännström’s seventh game of the season. The New York Islanders won 3–2.
