70-year-old Erdogan has been in power in Turkey since 2003, first as prime minister and since 2014 as president. Since last year, he is in his third term as president.
The next presidential election in Turkey will be held in 2028.
Erdogan has reshaped the Turkish state apparatus into a presidential system where power is largely concentrated in the head of state. According to the constitution, a president can only serve two terms of office, but since 2017, under certain conditions, this can be extended to three terms of office.
