The position of Tatars of Turkish descent has weakened significantly in Crimea since Russia took over the peninsula in 2014.
President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan demands that Russia return the Crimean peninsula to Ukraine.
– Our support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence is unwavering. International law requires that Crimea be returned to Ukraine, Erdoğan stated in his published video message.

Erdoğan also announced his support for the Crimean Tatars. The Crimean Tatars are a people of Turkish descent who have inhabited the peninsula since the 13th century.
