Sunday’s summit will take place at the Prime Minister’s residence in Budapest.
It is the first time since 2019 that the Turkish president is visiting Hungary.
Among other things, the leaders will talk about security, the defense industry and economic issues, stated Orbán’s press chief when the meeting was announced on August 11.
They are also expected to discuss preparations for next year’s meeting with the Turkish-Hungarian Cooperation Council HLSCC. The council was established in 2013 and holds meetings every two years.
The countries describe their relations as good, and Hungary’s support for Turkish EU membership has further strengthened ties.
They are also the only NATO members that have not yet ratified Sweden’s membership in the defense alliance.
At the NATO summit in Vilnius in July, an agreement was concluded between Turkey, Sweden and NATO that Turkey should approve Sweden “as soon as possible”. Erdogan promised a final Turkish decision when the country’s parliament reopens, which will happen in October. Hungary’s parliament begins work on September 25. The countries are said to cooperate closely in the process towards an approval by Sweden.
However, the Turkish president’s Sweden message in Vilnius is believed to have come as a surprise to Hungary’s government, writes the independent Hungarian news site Telex in an article about Sunday’s Budapest meeting.
The Hungarian government has indicated uncertainty within the governing coalition’s parliamentary group as the reason why a Hungarian decision was delayed, writes Telex.
