Equestrian: The World Cup final in jumping an important step before the Olympics: “Not clear who will ride”

– I will announce who it will be on June 30. It is not clear who will go yet, but the next few months will decide that, says national team captain Henrik Ankarcrona to SVT Sport.

The Olympics in Paris open on July 26.

Four riders will be selected, three competing in the team competition and three in the individual competition. Henrik von Eckermann, Malin Baryard Johnsson and Peder Fredricson were part of Sweden’s gold team in Tokyo 2021.

In two weeks, the World Cup final awaits in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for von Eckermann on King Edward and Fredricson on Catch Me Not, an important competition and a step towards the Olympics.

– It’s a good feeling. We’ve had podiums in every World Cup final since 2017, so we have a bit to live up to. Henrik von Eckermann is the reigning champion and has had a fantastic season, so there are great expectations, says Ankarcrona.

“Have no qualms”

The competition in Riyadh has the largest prize sum so far for a World Cup final and the show jumpers will share SEK 30 million.

Are there any concerns about competing in Saudi Arabia or has it become normalized?

– The International Equestrian Federation has put the final there and the riders have qualified and want to go and my job is to support them. I have no qualms about going and supporting them. Then there is a lot to say about that country but we are there to compete. That’s why we go, says Ankarcrona.

Any thoughts on doing something more than just going there and racing?
