Epic fantasy film by Steven Spielberg that he still can’t stand to this day

Epic fantasy film by Steven Spielberg that he still cant

32 years ago, director Steven Spielberg dedicated himself to one of the most famous fantasy stories of all time. Together with Robin Williams, he brought Peter Pan back to life on the big screen with a twist. The hook he directed is a continuation of the classic Peter Pan adventure.

Steven Spielberg made one of the most interesting Peter Pan films, but is dissatisfied with it himself

Hook begins many years after the first visit to Neverland. Peter, who once flew carelessly through the air, has now grown up. Yes, exactly! The boy who never wanted to grow up is now Father, husband and…lawyer. The memories of his exciting childhood are fading more and more.

However, Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman) has never forgotten his great rival. He seeks revenge and hatches a sinister plan. Together with his followers he kidnaps Peter’s children. The return to Neverland seems inevitable. Peter must face his past to save his family.

At first glance, Hook seems like perfect Spielberg material. Curious children’s eyes meet the gaze of adults no longer see magic in the world. From ET – The Extra-Terrestrial to Jurassic Park to BFG – Big Friendly Giant: the central hook motifs appear again and again in Spielberg’s work.

Nevertheless, the director is still not satisfied with his Peter Pan film adaptation. In 2018 he explained why he is so critical of fantasy films. Den of Geek captured his words.

Hook made me feel like a fish out of water. I had no confidence in the script, just the first act and the epilogue, but not the rest of the film. I didn’t know exactly what I was doing, and tried to cover up my insecurities with production values. The more unsure I became, the bigger and more colorful the sets became.

If you haven’t seen the film yet, you can find out for yourself on TV tonight whether it really is such a disappointing Spielberg. And if you already know Hook, it might be worth taking another look at the underrated fantasy adventure.
