Tuesday, December 21 at 3:59 p.m. UT will mark, for thenorthern hemisphere, the beginning ofwinter. the Sun at noon will be low on the horizon. It will be the longest night of the year and the shortest day.

For’southern hemisphere, the phenomenon is the opposite: it will be the longest day and the shortest night. For this part of the globe, it is the summer solstice. For the northern hemisphere, the duration of the day, which until now decreased, will now increase, unlike the day in the southern hemisphere.

Day length will increase in the Northern Hemisphere and decrease in the Southern Hemisphere until the day and night lengths are the same across the globe. This will mark thespring equinox for the northern hemisphere andautumn equinox for the southern hemisphere.
