The leak in an oil pipeline belonging to the Mexican state oil company Pemex, passing through the city of San Juan Guichicovi in the interior of the Mexican state of Oaxaca, spilled into a river within the city limits. The 8-kilometer coastline was polluted due to the leak reaching the sea shore with the effect of the current.
San Juan Guichicovi Mayor, Heriberto Luis Zacarias, described the spill as an environmental disaster and stated that due to the incident, most of the fresh water resources and grazing land in the region were polluted, and many wild animals such as fish, birds, turtles and badgers perished.
THE LEAK MAY HAVE OCCURRED DUE TO THEFT
It is thought that the incident occurred as a result of theft from the oil pipeline after the citizens found various repair tools such as hoses and wrenches in the area where the leak took place.
FISHING ACTIVITIES PROHIBITED
Three beaches on the coast of the state’s city of Salina Cruz have been polluted by the oil spill.
Fishermen said the pollution continues to expand. Salina Cruz Municipality announced that fishing activities in the surrounding area were banned due to the pollution, and stated that they met with Pemex officials in order to find a solution to the disaster. (UAV)
