Finland won World Cup gold after a giant thriller.
Then the focus ended up on two Swedes.
Judges Mikael Nord and Linus Öhlund are now fooling around after the effort in the final.
For Sweden, the World Cup adventure in Finland ended already in the quarterfinals, after collapsing against Canada, after being in the lead with 3-0. But there was all Swedish participation in the final despite that, when Mikael Nord – experienced SHL referee – together with Linus Öhlund had to judge the final where Canada was pitted against the host nation Finland.
Great drama
And there were some question marks about it already in advance. When Mikael Nord refereed his last World Cup final, seven years ago, he decided the match with a highly dubious, and probably incorrect, match penalty on a Finnish player. Again, this time he had a crucial part in the match, but this time to Canada’s great anger.
Canada was in the lead, 1-0, when Nord and Öhlund took a Canadian expulsion for high club. It turned out that the Finnish superstar Miro Heiskanen had hit the club in his own face, and Finland made first 1-1 in five against three games, and then 2-1 in the subsequent game in five against four. Canada also received a highly debatable deportation in the long run, which was absolutely decisive.
Toksågas now
Thomas Chabot pulled down Finnish Hannes Björninen in a duel, and went on an expulsion, and in the ensuing numerical superiority, Finland decided the match. Many thought, however, that Björninen should in fact go out for filming, and afterwards the criticism of the Swedish referee pair was real from the Canadian players. In Finland, it was admittedly believed that Canada should have had even more deportations. But if you look at reactions on social media, the verdict is clear.
When Finland was crowned world champion, criticism of the Swedish judges hailed in.
“A photo of the most important players for Finland” ‚writes a user, and at the same time posts a picture of the referee.
“What a joke, give the gold to Canada,” writes another.
“It must be rigged. Make it less obvious next time “, writes a third.
“It was almost too obvious how they wanted a home win,” writes another.
