Enormous amount for Börje Salming’s ALS foundation – that’s how much the tribute match raised

On February 11, 2023, Börje Salming got a match of his own.
When Swedish hockey’s greatest icons gathered to honor the late icon.
Now it is revealed exactly how much was collected during the “Game for Börje”.

The Swedish hockey elite had gathered for an evening in Start Collection glory in Gävle. Tre Kronor Legends faced the Toronto Maple Leafs Alumni in a very big-name exhibition match.

Börje’s tribute

During the tribute evening on February 11, 2023, Salming’s broom was also raised to the roof during emotional scenes in Brynäs’ home arena, the Monitor ERP arena. The main purpose of the evening was to raise money for the late hockey icon’s own Börje Salming ALS foundation.

The entire event went under the name “Game for Börje” and was a great success for fundraising for ALS research.
– Looking back, it was an absolutely fantastic day and evening. The goal was to pay tribute to Börje Salming and at the same time use the power of Brynäs IF, Toronto Maple Leafs, Tre Kronor, TV4 and together to collect as much money as possible for Börje Salming’s ALS foundation. Börje’s words: “use the power so that more people can avoid the shit”, was our guiding light from start to finish. We can state that the result exceeded our expectations and we would like to extend a big thank you to all individuals and companies who contributed to the total collection, which ended up at a fantastic 10.5 million kroner, says Brynä’s commercial manager Johan Cahlingwho was also responsible for the “Game for Börje” project.

“So amazing”

During the weekend in Gävle, TV4 broadcast several programs live from Stortorget and on the ice helped names such as Peter Forsberg, Mats Sundin and Nicklas Lidström to focus on the all-important ALS research. A real rally was made and now it is revealed exactly how much money was collected for the Börje Salming ALS foundation.

“Game for Börje” managed to collect as much as SEK 10.5 million, and it is money that will be extremely valuable for the continued research into the incurable nerve disease.
– We are extremely grateful for this fantastic gift that comes from Hockey Sweden and the entire Swedish people. This will make a big difference to ALS research, says Rikard Josefsonchairman of the board of the Börje Salming ALS foundation, in a press release.

This week, the gala “An evening for Börje” was also held to continue collecting money, and then a check of just over SEK 10 million was distributed from Brynäs IF to the foundation up on stage. Then the widow got Pia Salming receive the money that will be so incredibly valuable.
– Game for Börje was a fantastic arrangement and those of us who were there experienced the love and care from everyone who was there and from the entire Swedish people. The fact that we have also received a supplement of SEK 10.5 million that will go to ALS research is exactly what Börje wanted. I can only say a big thank you to everyone who helped implement and participated in Game for Börje, says Pia Salming, who also sits on the board of the ALS foundation.
