Enni Virjonen has won the under-18 heptathlon European Championship in Slovakia. Virjonen recorded his record score of 6151, which was enough for a fair victory before Great Britain Thea Brown (5807).
Third was Germany with 5732 points Maria Schnemilich.
Virjonen’s previous record points were 5948. Virjonen’s result is the fifth best result of all time by an under-18 and the top result of this age group in Europe.
The medal was Finland’s first in this year’s under-18 European Championships.
Virjonen, the pre-favorite in his sport, was second after the opening day of the 7-match with 3,655 points, ahead of Thea Brown (3,796).
On the second day, however, Virjonen turned the situation in his favor. He long jumped his outdoor track record of 604.
Especially the spear went well. Virjonen managed a result of 51.59 and improved his record by no less than 9.10 meters. The result is the all-time best recorded javelin result in the under-18 European Championship heptathlon.
In the final event, the Finn clocked 2:26.10 in the 800-meter run.
– The javelin was definitely the best success and the fact that I was able to gather that rage to the height of other sports again. We started from the bottom after the height and still I was able to break the Tampere result, Virjonen referred to the previous Finnish record in SUL’s press release.
17-year-old Virjonen opened his career perfectly on Friday by improving his age group 100m hurdles SE time to 13.13. On the other hand, in the height of the other sport, the Finn failed miserably, exceeding only 157. At his best, he has jumped 177.
In Kuula, in the last round, he settled down and got to a comfortable reading of 15.01. In the last event of the day, 200 meters, he beat the record time of 23.95 he ran in the Kaleva Games in Vaasa.
