(Finance) – Eni starts the creation of a new super computing system (High Performance Computing – HPC) HPC6 which will significantly enhance the capacity computational of the Green Data Center, going from the current 70 PFlop/s of HPC4 and HPC5 to over 600 PFlop/s peak of the new HPC6, equal to approximately 600 million billion complex mathematical operations per second. Eni’s new HPC system, characterized by extraordinary computational power, thus marks an increase in computing capacity equal to an order of magnitude greater than the previous one.
The HPC6 architecture was conceived with the same technology that constitutes the most powerful systems today in Europe and in the world: the HPC6 and the relative storage will be provided by Hewlett Packard Enterprise, winner of the competition which involved the main global players, using HPE Cray EX4000 and HPE Cray ClusterStor E1000 technology respectively. The computing system consists of AMD EPYC™ CPU and AMD Instinct™ GPU and is interconnected with HPE Slingshot low latency and high performance networking technology and once completed will be one of the most powerful supercalculators in the world dedicated to industrial use.
In line with the ongoing commitment to sustainability, HPC6 will have performance energy which improve consumption efficiency and minimize carbon emissions and will be installed in a dedicated area at the Green Data Center where a new liquid cooling system was created for even more sustainable and efficient management.
The CEO of Eni, Claudio Descalzideclared: “Through this initiative we continue to decisively support our technological leadership, reaffirming Eni’s role in supercomputing, and we relaunch our ambitions in the field of infrastructures dedicated to it. This project reflects our constant commitment towards “innovation and digitalisation also at the service of our energy transition path. The new HPC system significantly enhances our computing capabilities and marks a new turning point in the way we face the challenges of energy security, competitiveness and sustainability” .
With this investment Eni strengthens its leadership in the field of high performance computing for industrial use and confirms itself as a company with high technological content in support of the energy transition. In fact, HPC6 not only supports Eni’s digitalisation and innovation process but at the same time represents a crucial asset to face the challenges of achieving net zero through a decisive technological lever for the acquisition of competitive advantages in the development of new sources of power.
