The “Emu mother” has been captured after several days of love flight.
Now she is put in “protective custody” on the farm.
But her former lover, “The Old Man”, is still gone.
Ivette Gutierrez-Cortez had just left her daughter at preschool outside Ronneby and was on her way home again along a winding road. After a curve, an emu suddenly stands in front of the car.
– Yes, my first reaction was to drive carefully so that it did not start to attack. Then I thought I’ll take a video so there’s evidence and call the police right away.
When Aftonbladet reaches her, she is still quite shocked. But she has a suspicion about where the bird has come from.
– There is an exotic farm nearby. There is someone who has camels, llamas and some other animals there. If it is, it is located at Angelskog.
Been gone for several days
Indeed, it turns out that the emu – or the “Emu mother” as she is called – has been on the run from Angelskog’s farm for several days. The owner, the former SD politician Tomas Lundberg, is happy that she has finally made it back. But it was a struggle.
– We have been trying to attract it for several days. Now we managed to capture it. It wasn’t easy, but now she’s home.
Okay, but how did you capture it?
– It was a bit brutal. We had to forcefully lay over her. But she doesn’t seem to have minded.
Love sick and on the run
According to Tomas Lundberg, the “Emu mother” has run away to find a new partner.
– They are very modern in that way. The male is brooding and he has disappeared or he is already laying on eggs. Then she wants to find a new one. So there is a lovesick emu mother on the loose. These birds are so damn funny!
But wait, is he missing too?
– Yes, he has disappeared. We haven’t found any trace of him, so he could be lurking somewhere. But, that means she may have been looking for a new male. Just like the males in some other species. Once there was even one who tried to kill his chickens. The male was not interested in her and then she thinks: “The damn kids”. Kind of like bears.
What is the name of the one who is gone then?
– He doesn’t really have a name, but we call him “The Old Man”. He is not on the run. He’s just off the lot. Probably.
Not the first time it houses emus
It is not the first time that the Emus have escaped from Tomas Lundberg. In 2018, “Houdini” escaped from the farm before dying of shock three hours later when he was about to be captured, wrote BLT.
– Eh, yes exactly that yes. But this one was not stressed that way, the other one died from the shock. But this one is physically undamaged.
The natural question is what about security?
– No, but we don’t know how she got out. But now we have put her in escape-proof protective custody. We have a 5.5 hectare area where we fenced ourselves, emus, llamas, ducks and horses. She has evidently escaped, but we don’t know where. We’ll have to find that.
Aftonbladet has been in contact with the police, who say they handed the case over to the County Administrative Board in Blekinge.
