The VNG also wants to increase the wages of these employees, but says there is no money. “They do very important work, but strictly speaking they are not municipal officials. This concerns subsidized work that is paid for by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment,” says VNG spokesman Cees den Bakker. “We are having firm talks with the ministry, but minister Carola Schouten says there is no money. It involves hundreds of millions of euros and the municipalities do not have that money.” The ministry says it is still in talks with VNG.
