Employees of the Zaporizhia power plant The Russians are holding

Workers tell the British broadcasting company BBC that grenades hit the power plant area every day.

Workers at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant say they are being held hostage by Russian forces.

Russia has been in possession of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant since March and considers it a military base. The power plant is run by Ukrainian technicians.

At the nuclear power plant, the internet has been disabled and food is available for employees in one room. According to the employee, the rest of the premises have been turned into a Russian base. There are observation points on the roof of the nuclear power plant. Russia is estimated to have around 500 soldiers at the power plant.

– My working day is constant stress, one of the employees says in a text message to the BBC.

However, according to the employees, they are still able to monitor the operation of the power plant properly.

The UN warns of the threat of disaster

Russia has been accused of using the power plant as a shield. It launches rocket attacks from the power plant area to nearby areas.

Among other things, the UN has warned that fighting near the power plant could lead to a disaster. Another of the Ukrainian workers interviewed by the BBC says that grenades have fallen near the power plant every day.

Russia and Ukraine have blamed each other for the firing in the power plant area.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has demanded that the organization’s inspectors be allowed into the power plant as soon as possible.
