Emmanuel Macron promises the abolition of the TV license fee in the event of re-election

During his first campaign meeting, in Poissy in the Yvelines, Emmanuel Macron, presidential candidate, announced that he would abolish the television license fee if he were re-elected for a second term. He said it was a choice consistent with the abolition of the housing tax » which already applies to 80% of French people and will concern all households by 2023.

The audiovisual license fee is an annual tax of 138 euros payable by all metropolitan households liable for housing tax and who have a television set. It contributes to the financing of public broadcasting, such as France Télévisions, or France Médias Monde, which notably houses RFI and France 24. The abolition of the license fee will deprive public finances of a revenue of 3.6 billion euros which will be compensated by the State budget, without this being akin to privatization.
