Emma Watson confronts humanitys greatest downfall story

After weird or dark arthouse works like Requiem for a Dream, Darren Aronofsky ventured into a major blockbuster for the first time with Noah in 2014. The 130 million dollar film is not a conventional Bible cinema, but one bulky, idiosyncratic viewing experience, which is slightly offensive. RTL II broadcasts the mix of fantasy epic and psychological thriller on Thursday.

Fantasy bombast on TV: That’s what Noah is about

The story of Aronofsky’s film is based on well-known passages from the Old Testament, where Noah (Russell Crowe) Visions of a great flood that will bring the end of humanity. He sees himself as the chosen one who is supposed to save his wife Naameh (Jennifer Connelly), his sons Ham (Logan Lerman) and Shem (Douglas Booth) and their friend Ila (Emma Watson) on an ark together with two specimens of the animal world each.

Noah transforms Bible material into mysterious fantasy adventures

Aronofsky’s work is often only vaguely reminiscent of the well-known Bible story. The director prefers to stage a strange mixture of epic visual values, fantasy elements such as the Transformers-like stone guardians and surreal nightmare visions.

Russell Crowe initially turns out to be a popular figure in the title role, but when Noah becomes an oppressive chamber play on the high seas in the last third, Crowe’s character almost appears as a character ice-cold maniac driven by questionable motives on. The film becomes a fascinatingly different blockbuster experiment that continues to divide opinions to this day.
