Political crisis broke out in Kuwait. Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Mashal al-Ahmad al-Jabir al-Sabah dissolved the parliament with the decree he published. In the decree, the parliament was accused of violating the constitution, including using “offensive and inappropriate” language.
The decree in question came after ministers boycotted the parliamentary session yesterday after interpreting the speech made by MP Abdul Karim al-Kandari as an insult to the emir.
Despite the parliamentary system in force since 1962, Kuwait experiences constant disagreements between the cabinets established by the al-Sabah family and the elected MPs. Disagreements prevent lawmakers from enacting reforms that would diversify the economy, causing recurring budget deficits and a decline in foreign investment.
