Emil Ruusuvuori took the tough legendary tennis tournament Wimbledon in the second round. Rusuvuori defeated the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas set 7–6 (8–6), 7–6 (12–10), 3–6 and 6–3. Tsitsipas is eleventh in the world rankings. He was also ranked 11th at Wimbledon.
Tsitsipas has been at his best in the world ranking third.
Ruusuvuori is currently 87th in the world list. Ruusuvuori now advanced to the third round, i.e. to the top 32, for the first time in his career in a grand slam tournament. Next up is the Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. He is 58th in the world ranking.
– This is a very special moment. I have been chasing this third round spot at the grand slam level. Today there were really tight road breaks and somehow I won them. In the fourth set I tried to take control and I succeeded. I just focused on every point and moment throughout the match. Especially in the fourth set. Couldn’t let the thoughts run away too far, because otherwise it would be bad, Ruusuvuori stated in the field interview.
According to the tennis association, a Finn in the third round of Wimbledon is a rarity. The previous Finn in the top 32 in men’s singles at Wimbeledon was Jarkko Nieminen in 2007. A year earlier, Nieminen was even in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, i.e. in the top eight.
In fact, Jarkko Nieminen is the last Finn to reach the 3rd round in singles at a grand slam tournament, as he was at the Australian Open in 2015.
