Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), shared a post from X regarding the M pox virus.
“IT CONTINUES TO CREATE AN EMERGENCY”
Noting that WHO’s Emergency Committee met today to address the M-pox virus, Ghebreyesus said, “The Committee informed me that the increase in M-pox virus cases continues to constitute a public health emergency of international importance. I accepted this recommendation.” he said.
Ghebreyesus underlined that this decision was based on the increasing number of cases, their geographical spread, operational challenges on the ground, and the need to create and maintain a coherent response between countries and partners.
CALL FOR SOLIDARITY
WHO Director-General Ghebreyesus called for solidarity with the international community to increase their interventions in countries affected by the virus and end the epidemic.
WHO changed the expression “monkeypox virus (Monkeypox)” to M pox virus (Mpox) in 2022 due to concerns about racism and discrimination.
M pox virus was declared a “public health emergency of international concern” by WHO on August 14.
