Emergency department redevelopment plans get a boost

Plans to redevelop the Brantford General Hospital emergency department have received a boost from the Healthcare and Municipal Employees’ Credit Union.

The credit union recently donated $10,000 to the Brant Community Healthcare System Foundation in support of the hospital’s emergency department plans. In total, the credit union will donate $100,000 to the initiative.

“We are so proud to be a part of this incredible project, and are honored to be able to contribute to the future of healthcare in the Brant community,” Jason Moran, the credit union’s president and CEO, said. “We’re excited to be able to help the foundation reach its goal and make a difference in the lives of the members of our community.

“As we strive to serve our members with excellence, it is truly rewarding when we get to support a cause like this that will have such a positive impact on our community.”

The foundation is the fund-raising arm of the Brant Community Healthcare System, the sole provider of emergency medical services in Brantford-Brant and the surrounding area.

The hospital’s emergency department provides medical help to more than 58,000 patients a year, well above capacity.

Redevelopment of the emergency department will cost more than $25 million. The foundation is responsible for 10 per cent of the construction costs as well as medical equipment, furnishings and other items not covered by the Ontario Ministry of Health

“We are so grateful to Healthcare and Municipal Employees’ Credit Union for their commitment as we work together to re-imagine healthcare in our community,” foundation chair Heather Wilson said in a prepared statement. “Once redeveloped, the emergency department will nearly double in size which is critical to meet the needs of our growing community today and into the future.”
